December 15th-16th,2007---North American Ice Fishing Championship
Lake Henry and Lake Agnes located in Alexandria, Minnesota were the meeting
grounds for this years 2007 Championship. Richie and I headed into this
event with high hopes after placing 5th at the Wamplers Lake qualifier this
past February 11th, 2007. There were 75 two person teams, representing 11 states from across the ice belt, that were invited to this years 2007 NAIFC.
States represented included NY,WI,IL,MI,PA,OH,NE,MN,ND,SD,& IN,
all competing for a piece of the $25,000 purse, the Diamond rings, and the wood!
The 2 day event targeted Crappies and Sunfish with the goal of weighing in your teams best 16 Sunfish and your best 16 Crappies over the 2 day period.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
2007 North American Ice Fishing Championsip---Day One
Day One Saturday Dec. 15th---After the rules banquet Rich and I decided we
would fish a spot that held a couple of "better" fish we found while pre-
fishing earlier in the week. Rich and I headed out to our GPS spot, drilled few holes and lowered our electronics while we set up to fish. The horns are sounded and the fishing begins on Lake Henry at 7:30am. The crappies were really hitting good right off the bat this morning with our better fish weighing in at just under a 1/2 pound. Lindy Glow Fat boys and Your bobbers down,Wolfram jigs tipped with Makiplastic worked well this morning.
The Sunfish we caught came mixed in with the Crappies throughout the day. The bite was aggressive this morning, with the specs and sunfish racing up
thru the water column to pick off our Maki,Lindy, and Wolfram presentations.
Rich and I felt pretty good heading to the scales with a 5+ pound bag. The
competition was tough today and the weights showed it. One pound seperated
teams 1 thru 47. Rich caught our biggest fish of the day weighing in at.46
pounds helping us earn a 9th place finish with 5.11 pounds after day one.
We felt good heading into day 2 a third of a pound gap between us and 1st.
==========================================================================
Day Two Sunday Dec. 16th---After another outstanding steak dinner at Rudy's
Red Eye Grill we decided we would head to the same spot we fished Saturday.
We headed to lake Henry with great anticipation knowing only one "good"
fish seperated us from saturdays 1st place team of Justin Elliot and John
Danula,"the walkers", NAIFC vetrans, and a high ranked team out of Wisconsin.
Our ride out to "the spot" on our Artic cat ATV and Snowmobile was a little
rough with all the frozen nook and crannies on Henry this morning! My etrex
GPS shutoff delaying us from getting to our spot for about 45 seconds. We
got back on track and started drilling holes in a 1200 square foot area in
22 feet of water just adgacent to a 17 foot inside curve. A sticky bottom
near the basin! I had trouble; interference and a possible weak tranducer
issue with my FL-20 Vexilar so I lowered my MarCum LX-3 down the hole and
marked fish right away. I was still setting up my fish trap when the horn sounded at about 7:40 AM. I lowered a glo optic jig tipped with a glow Maki
plastic "Polli". The fish were less aggressive almost right from the start this morning. I started off catching about ten 5 inch Crappies. I thought
to myself, Rich and I just want to be consistant today and bring another
5 pound bag to the scales, and I'm not starting off to good with all these
potato chip crappies. I released quite a few small crappies before 8:00 AM.
The fish were not chasing the bait like they were yesterday but they were
still very catchable. Between 8 and 9:45 AM, I was blessed by the "Fishing
Gods". I quickly picked up two 1/2 pound specs and a handful of better
than average Bluegills. I'm a tight liner by trade but as the morning
progressed the bite got tougher. Just as a golfer would reach into his bag
for the right club, I decided to reach for my St. Croix Legend Ice rod
with the medium spring bobber to help me detect the extremely light bites
I was starting to encounter. A Huge Thanks goes out to Jacek Gawlinski and
Zbigniew Wojcik, "Team Poland" from Illinois for giving me this setup at
the 2007 Silver Lake, NY Trap Attack. Thanks Again Z & Ski "Team Poland".
By 9:25 AM I had a good limit of Crappies and was looking for a few gils
to add to my bucket. I was was still marking fish at 9:30 AM when another
team came up with in about 30 feet from Rich and I and Started drilling
holes like madmen with the loudest power auger I have ever heard. I was
thinking these guys had a Harley Davidson auger from the way it sounded.
Rich and I were very happy with our new 4 Stroke StrikeMaster Strike lite
auger. It cut holes and purred like a kitten all week long! I had hoped
the loud drilling wouldn't spook the fish I was marking. I had been
fishing a Nickel plated Wolfram with a red "Maki" from MakiPlastic when
I noticed a solid red bar race up and out of the school on my MarCum LX-3 Flasher. It was heading towards my jig.....I was looking at the spring
waiting for another lite bite... them WHAM, the spring bobber buckled and
the fight was on! After a brief fight I landed my best fish of the week!
I lowered the .63 pound Bluegill into my bucket and started to believe we
had a solid chance to make a run at this years championship. At 10:00 AM
I walked over to Rich to check on his sucess. He said he picked up his
limit of Crappies but was still looking for a few Sunfish. I let him know
that I had a good limit of Suns and Specs with a few Specs weighing just
over a 1/2 pound and a big Sunfish that I thought could be in the running
for the "big fish" award. Slowing our jigging motion down to little or no
movement helped us ice more fish troughout the day. At 12:00pm I knew we
had a better bag than we weighed in yesterday. My best 16 fish at that
point tipped my scale at just over 5 pounds when I sorted them! From 12pm
until 1:30 pm I used a nickel Tungsten Antz tipped with a few spikes
which helped up grade my 16 fish catch with a few more tough biting Sunfish. I worked on sorting Richie's best fish into our best 16 and
made it back to the weigh in with about five minutes left in the event.
We headed towards the end of the weigh in line knowing it would take
a little less than 2 hours to hear our final tally. As the line inched
along we noticed there were fewer 5 pound limits than the day before.
We knew we would be in the top 5 by the time 2/3rds of the teams weighed in.
Then we heard a NY team weigh in with a 5.07 pound bag. Steve Eichler and
Mike Chase from the Cooperstown, NY area. I knew if Jim Kusada and Terry
Rogers, Trap pros from Wisconsin, and the walkers John and Justin had 5+
pound limits it would be tough to beat them. Mike McNett and Tony Boshold
from Illinois were also in the mix after a 3rd place finish after day one.
At close to 4:00pm it was our turn to weigh our catch........
We weighed in 5.52 pounds of Sunfish and Crappies for the largest limit
of the tournament. The .63 pound Bluegill I Caught won the "Big Fish"
catagory and help propel Rich "Poppa Smurf" Stachurski and Kevin "reelemin"
Riley, to a 1st Place finish at the 2007 North American Ice Fishing Championship!

January, February, March
2006/2007 Ice fishing season report---The Ice fishing season has begun for
the hardwater angler here in the north east! The late start to winter had
many wondering if they would be able to walk on water at all this season.
First Ice for my brother Charlie and I occured last December 11th thru 17th
2006. Charlie and I were national qualifiers for the North American Ice
fishing Championships(NAIFC) based on our finish at the Wisconsin Trap Attack held at Lake Redstone in Lavalle,WI. last february 2006. The 2006
Championship was held at Lake Carlos in Alexandria, MN where 75 of the best
Icefishing teams in the country competed for a piece of the $25,000 purse!
I am disappointed that Team "Reel'Em In" didn't finish in the money this
year at the NAIFC, but we had a great time trying. Even if the fishing was
was the brutally toughest I have ever experienced! A HUGE THANK YOU is in
order to all the sponcors that helped defray some of the costs associated
with fishing Iceteams pro circuit. Thanks Again to the following ------>
